The acronym IP refers the Index of Protection. It is acted to measure the degree of protection provided by enclosures around the electrical components in accordance with European standard EN 60-529 on IP Index Protection.
This index is represented by 2 digits. Thus, an electric component with an index of protection IP 44 will have its electric part protected from the solid objects bigger than 1 mm (the first IP figure being 4) and its electric part protected from water projections coming from all directions (the second IP figure being 4).
